Book Review: Freya Ede ‘Be The Blooming Flower’

BOOK REVIEW

“sometimes the pain we inflict on ourselves is really the pain most caused by others.”

Be The Blooming Flower, is a poetry book about the journey through the struggles of mental health, trauma, and finding yourself. In a world full of pain, Freya Ede writes such elegant and inspiring poems that guide the reader on their journey of healing, to know they’re not alone in how they feel, as well as trusting ourselves to find the place we need to be.

Divided into four chapters, ‘for when you are buried deep’ opens the book with a suffocating and almost overbearing read with depthful writing that is emotive and engaging to dive deep into the lingering pain to open up.

Next up is ‘for when love plants its seed’ which furthermore plays on the heartstrings of the reader. It’s a powerful chapter with a lot to unpack, yet many pieces are resonating to everyday life for some. Talking about some heavy topics of consent, guilt, and the feeling of being stuck in a moment of time or stuck in a situation one cannot escape from, makes this a cherishing part of the book that will make survivors feel seen and find wording for their confusion.

Moving on to ‘for when you want to flourish’ is full of inspiring poetry discussing strength and healing with powerful wording. Knowing that healing is a process, the poetry in this particular part of the book is outstanding as it captivates the reader to realise we must trust where we are in the present moment.

Finally, ‘for when you are blooming’ closes out Be The Blooming Flower, with the opening line, “flowers are temporary, so is pain.” It’s an endearing chapter to soak in while reminiscing on the stories scattered throughout the entire book.

Freya Ede is a poet who is passionate about helping people better themselves through my work. They have been through countless mental health struggles and their writing is a reflection of what they and many others have experienced. They absolutely love animals and believe they are important in our lives. They have the power to become our soulmates and best friends. They also an incredible arty and love to draw and paint.
