Audriix is nothing less than a force of nature on her debut album, Status Change.
‘Stampede’ opens the album telling the tale of the modern age of dating. When a situation would end and old flames would come back, Audriix says, “This song describes the feeling of these same guys coming at me like a “stampede,” trying again and again even though “nothing’s gonna happen then or now.” It has catchy lyrics and pure-pop instrumental that will make the listener immediately dance.
Following this, ‘Ace of Spades’ has an intense piano driven with delicate vocals from the songstress. It’s a great addition to the album drenched with empowerment after being held back for so long. Next up is, ‘The Odds’ is a beautiful and memorable listen as it discusses breaking curses and moving forward together to become one. While ‘Gone’ has a nice build-up with a progressional instrumental alongside the songstress’ theatrical vocals that are just fascinating. And ‘Hypnotize’ has a beat-heavy instrumental with illuminate vocals from the songstress that really bring this song to life. While ‘Crazy’ describes the pain of long-distance relationships and how love becomes more consuming over an acoustic piece with a sensually charged instrumental.
On the half-way mark of the record, ‘Red Flag’ details a personal story that many unfortunately will relate to of someone coming off too strong from the get-go. Covered in slick beats and empowering lyricism, Audriix says, “the message is, ‘if you tell someone you’re not interested, he needs to respect that. No means no’.” Following this, ‘Off Our Minds’ has an interesting instrumental with sweet storytelling along with nostalgic-like vocals that are just dreamy. Whereas, ‘Volts’ has soaring vocals and a glorious instrumental that moves the story throughout the album along nicely.
Meanwhile, ‘30 Years’ is an interesting listen as it refers to keeping a relationship off each other’s timelines and hiding it to last. While ‘Bandit’ has a dance-ready swinging Latin rhythms that adds flavour to the record. And ‘Obienent’ is an empowering track with a high powered battle cry about being abused with the tone that enough is enough. With the repetition of ‘I'm not gonna be obedient’ it’s an anthem of empowerment for women with a message for all women who have been wronged and refuse to accept a toxic situation.
Closing out the album with ‘Possible Not Probable’ is a powerful end track. The songstress says she has ‘no regrets’ progressing the album on more to a close. The instrumental is absolutely beautiful with powerful vocals that really sum up the entire record as a memorable piece altogether.
Audriix has music running in her blood and that is displayed perfectly over the 13-tracks. Her vocals are edgy with a sense of light building up during the choruses with fabulous melodies. The material throughout the 13-tracks is upbeat and energised with bright sounds with a good mix of empowering, heartbreak, and romantic tunes on this record. The album reveals another fascinating side to Audriix’s artistry.
One thing that stands out throughout the album is the storytelling. Audriix discusses being strong and empowered, compared to pity party like tracks. It’s an outstanding listen and has something for everyone. And the album compliments how technology has taken over in relationships making it more accessible to connect on social media platforms, dating apps, and texting to enable to discover more information about a person before they’re ready to disclose.
In reflecting on the making of Status Change, Audriix hopes that the album leaves listeners with a sense of confidence and strength. “None of these songs portray the woman as the victim,” she says. “It’s all about being strong and standing up for yourself. I hope that listeners come away feeling empowered to do whatever they set their minds to.”
Status Change, is truly a masterpiece from singer-songwriter Audriix with its heart-on-sleeve storytelling and magical instrumental that pieces the entire record beautifully together.
