Album Review: The Coronas ‘True Love Waits’

Irish alt-rock band The Coronas are back with their brand-new sixth-studio 12-track album, True Love Waits.

Known as one of Ireland’s best bands, the band has been on a wild and wonderful 13-year journey together. It’s great to see the music industry isn’t stalling their releases as a whole as The Coronas have come to feed their music hungry fans. Over the 12-track album, the band dives into a lot of things that immediately showcases it has something for everyone discussing everything from new love, loss, and looking back on past achievements.

The opening self-titled track is a multi-layered, emotive with glistening melodies introduction to the album. It allures the listener in from the get-go. Showcasing emotions and passion, it’s a great introduction to what’s to come.

‘Find the Water’ became the album’s lead single. It’s a catchy, charming, and memorable track; it begins with vocals and piano breaking into a soaring, intense chant that is familiar, yet something new for the band.

As the album progresses, it builds momentum as they mixed up the creation inviting various artists to contribute to the tracks, like on ‘Lost in The Thick of It’ featuring Gabrielle Aplin, it’s a beautiful and moving track that might have lost its meaning if there wasn’t a collaboration with a female artist.

‘I Think We Jinxed It’ is about a broken relationship searching for ‘something to cling to’ surrounded by a sad vibe. ‘Haunted’ is a magical and strong addition to the album. ‘Brave’ is a wonderful, celebratory track. ‘Cold’ has a prayer-like chorus over percussion, piano, and synths discussing self-doubt and decision-making that can be relatable for many. ‘Heat of the Moment’ is an earworm and radio-friendly track with its contemporary pop instrumental, soaring lyricism. Whereas, ‘Light Me Up’ has an anthemic atmosphere.

Closing the album, ‘LA at Night’ justifying their new journey with this 12-track record. There’s a moment of silence as the song fades out allowing the lister a moment to reflect on the overall masterpiece. The band’s energy and passion is front and centre of the album.

True Love Waits, is a great release showcasing their passionate storytelling and instrumental. From the first listen, it’s clear to see the band is onto something new; opening new musical doors with this particular project that’s a masterpiece alone. Nothing is overdone as each track was produced with a perfect balance of everything musical. Each track was created effortlessly, and the track layout was chosen in a wonderful manner. It’s a mature release from The Coronas.

Although True Love Waits, sees the band going in a different musical direction to what fans usually expect. Their change in dynamic is profound offering stronger melodies and mellow vibes that reflect their changes, different sound, and a decade of experience.

The Coronas are frontman and lead singer Danny O’Reilly, bass guitarist Graham Knox and drummer Conor Egan. True Love Waits, follows their previous five albums, Heroes or Ghosts, Tony Was an Ex-Con, Closer to You, The Long Way, and Trust the Wire.
