EP Review: Anna Clendening ‘Evolve’

American singer-songwriter Anna Clendening has released her brand-new five-track extended-play Evolve.

Opening up the EP, ‘Call It Like It Is’ is an unapologetic track that showcases the songstress’ emotional side that is simply powerful when writing this song from what’s on her mind, in her heart, and from her life experiences. Acknowledging a situation within a relationship, she discovers it was a result of simply not wanting to be alone.

Following this, ‘Fazed’ showcases the songstress’ effortless talents as a musician with her pure artistry. It’s an incredible addition to the EP that strengthens her music discography. Making this track a masterpiece, it will resonate with many.

Next up is ‘Love song’ which is drenched in angelic tones describing a wreckage, that tells the tale of how hard it is to open your heart. Sung over a beautiful atmosphere with gorgeous vocals and instrumentation, the songstress’ fresh voice is absolutely breathtakingly wonderful on this particular tune.

Then, ‘Sorry I Do That’ is a brutally honest track about mental health. On the anthemic chorus, the singer-songwriter reveals, “I fucking hate it when I say I hate you, why do I say shit even when it’s not true?” As she’s truthful with her material, she penned this particular tune about her borderline personality disorder that in turn will touch the hearts of those feeling alone.

Closing out the EP, ‘Get Me’ showcases the songstress’ multi-talented musical abilities with excellence throughout the emotional track. It’s a definite break-up anthem for the ages. Along with the new-found confidence, the guitar against her breathy verses really brings the song to life.

Anna Clendening is able to strike a chord with listeners with her relatable and sometimes hard-hearing storytelling. She’s open about her mental health and personal struggles throughout her unfiltered lyrics, vocals that quake in emotion, and breath-takingly beautiful instrumentation. This EP is a great addition to her music discography, especially as she’s striving to normalise conversations about topics she’s brought to life over these five-tracks.

Evolve, is the follow-up EP to her debut EP Waves, released in 2019.
