EP Review - Walking On Cars 'Clouds'

After an amazing 10-year run, on August 21, 2020 Irish indie-rock four-piece band Walking On Cars announced their separation, and with this farewell they released their last project of a six-track extended-play, Clouds.

The lead single, ‘All The Drinks’ is the final track they wrote together and is a fitting song as a send off. Opening the EP with this track really set the mood for what yet to come. With their signature instrumental and vocals appearing at the get-go, it’s clear this record is set for success.

Following this, ‘Try Again’ is a perfect addition to the EP. It tells the tale of struggling to let go, told in a powerful way with empowering instrumentals along with Patrick’s vocals that truly bring the song alive.

Next up is, ‘Colonize My Heart’ has their natural style that makes this track more emotional. It begins with an acoustic guitar leading into beautiful harmonies that progress the sound into an amazing build-up pulling on the heart-strings of the listener.

Meanwhile, ‘Walls’ opens with a piano refrain and delicate vocals, it strongly builds up before the chorus in a fascinating way, sounding like a letter from an old friend.

‘I Still Want You’ hits differently. The instrumental is groovy along with an emotive vibe throughout as Patrick’s vocals collide perfectly with the harmonies in a mesmerising way on the chorus.

Closing the EP out with ‘Eyes Are The Size of The Moon’, it’s a slow ballad accompanied by piano with Patrick’s vocals that is a perfect concluding track with an emotive ending that will leave this project a memorable listen.

Each track consists of their emotional instrumental music accompanied by excellent vocal tones that truly bring each song to life. The EP was produced effortlessly, with every piece filled with excellence that will catch the listener by surprise with the music and vocals.

Parting ways after a decade makes Clouds, a bittersweet yet memorable listen. All in all, this is a great departing record, although it is sad to see such a talented group go their separate ways. Upon the final EP release, in their departing statement they said Clouds is a ‘thank you to you all’.

Walking On Cars are Patrick Sheehy, Sorcha Durham, Evan Hadnett, and Paul Flannery. Clouds, follows their debut album Everything This Way (2016), and sophomore album Colours (2019).
